Classes


Try something new - just for the FUN of it!

Our teachers are talented, experienced local artists with inspiring techniques and projects to share. Enjoy spending the evening in a creative space with supportive people - whether you're a seasoned pro or a new beginner, everyone is welcome!

All classes are held at the I Heart Art Studio - 15 Vivian Drive, Pleasant Hill, CA.

Advance registration and payment is required.  Register here via PayPal (each class you select requires a separate transaction) or you can mail a check to Concord Art Association, PO Box 641, Concord CA 94122. You can also register in person with cash/check/credit card at a CAA meeting or event. 

A minimum number of registered students is required 48 hours before each class date to avoid cancellation, so register early and don't miss out! Please review our refund and cancellation policies at the bottom of this page.

Supplies that each student must bring (or purchase) are listed with each class description. Any supplies not listed will be provided by the instructor at no extra charge.

Members of the Concord Art Association and I Heart Art are eligible for the member price. You can join either organization at any time - click here for CAA membership details or click here for IHA membership details.

September 5 - Tuesday   6-8:30pm     
Creating Abstract Designs with Shading
Enjoy learning new ways to create original abstract designs with colored pencils, while improving your shading skills and expanding your understanding of visual expression.

September 7 - Thursday  6-8pm        
Painting Handmade Soap - Fall/Holiday theme
Learn how to paint on glycerine soaps! Handpainted soaps make great gifts or keep them for yourself.
Supplies to bring:  None  (you may wish to wear a smock or apron)

September 12 - Tuesday  6-9pm    
Bookmaking and More
Learn to make a variety of handmade books of different sizes and bindings. You'll also experiment with embellishments and simple printing techniques to create your own themed art book from inside to outside.
Supplies to bring:  Pencils, scissors, ruler, glue stick (embellishments will be provided, but feel free to bring your favorite ribbons, charms, beads, buttons)

September 14 - Thursday  6-9pm
Monoprinting with a Gel Plate
Learn a wide variety of monoprinting techniques to create amazing backgrounds for paintings, journals, greeting cards and more using a versatile gel printing plate and acrylic paints.
Supplies to bring:  8x10" gel plate (Gelli Arts brand is recommended), fluid acrylic paints in your favorite colors (craft or student quality are fine), 2" or 3" wide soft rubber brayer, water container, paper towels.

September 19 - Tuesday  6:30-8:30pm    
Ladies' Craft Night - Halloween Wreath
Let's have a drink (or two) and make a trendy Halloween wreath - it's easy and fun! Hang it on your front door or anywhere in your home - finished size is approx. 19" in diameter.  A free set of Halloween gift tags are included.
Supplies to bring:  Dry adhesive, adult beverage or snack to share

DIY Bath Bombs
Learn how to make your own soaker, fizzy and bubble bombs for the bath. These are great as gifts or you can treat yourself.
Supplies to bring:  None (you may wish to wear an apron or smock; long hair should be tied back)

September 26 - Tuesday  6-9pm    
Paper Maché Sculpture
Learn how to build the underlying structure for your sculpture with newspapers/magazine pages and masking tape. We'll begin giving your sculpture more shape with the paper maché process during class, and you'll receive instructions for completing your project at home.
Supplies to bring:  Large bag of old newspapers and/or magazines to tear up, masking tape

September 28 - Thursday  6-9pm
Gestural Sculpture with Foil
Learn how to make a sculpture of two characters using aluminum foil, paint, glue and baking flour. Once painted, this sculpture will look like it's made of bronze. This process is beginner-friendly - no special experience needed.
Supplies to bring:  Inexpensive paintbrush, glue gun with glue sticks, a small (approx. 4'x4") block of Styrofoam (you may wish to wear an apron or smock).

Art Journaling - Collage and Color
Explore your creativity and inspire your world as we play with a variety of expressive techniques to paint, doodle and collage the pages of your art journal
Supplies to bring:  Journal with heavyweight, unlined paper inside, permanent/waterproof black pens in different nib sizes  (supply kit with Ranger Dylusions journal and set of 6 Sakura Micron pens available for additional $30 if you alert the instructor no later than Sept. 26)

Pocket Sketching - Landscape
This sketching technique is easy to learn, compact and portable. You can complete a sketch quickly and easily in less than 25 minutes using a water-soluble pen and small watercolor paint set. Try it at home or while traveling - beginner friendly!
Supplies to bring:  Water-soluble pen, watercolor paints and brush, 4x6" drawing pad, water canister  (a complete supply kit is also available for purchase in class for an additional $35)

Minimum # of students required: 4  (maximum 12)

Art Journaling - Doodles and Lines
Doodling in black and white gives your art journal a more graphic appeal. Explore different ways of drawing lines, shapes and patterns to fill your pages with magnificent images.

October 17 - Tuesday  5:30-9pm
Creating Texture in Watercolor
As you create your own semi-abstract watercolor landscape, you'll learn different techniques to create more texture to give your painting a loose, poetic feel. Beginner-friendly and great for seasoned painters, too. 
Supplies to bring:  Watercolor brushes, palette knife, small container for water, non-absorbent board or cookie sheet (12"x16" or larger). Paper and paints will furnished in limited supply; feel free to bring more of your own.

October 19 - Thursday  6:30-8:30pm
Ladies' Craft Night - Stamps, Papers & Inks
Create 6 adorable papercraft projects - greeting cards, gift tags, dimensional favors, wine bottle tags. Each is designed for beginners and seasoned crafters alike to take home in a personalized swag bag. Free party favor included.

October 24 - Tuesday   6-8:30pm 
The Art of Social Media for Self-Promotion
Artists who want to build a bigger following, create more buzz about their work and generate more sales will learn how to use social media more effectively. We'll focus primarily on Facebook and Instagram - how to develop engaging content, nurture relationships, measure results and more.

Printing Your Own Collage Papers

Learn how to print designs and patterns on transparent and lightweight papers to use for collage. Make your collage art more complex and harmonious!

Refund and cancellation policies:
Your class registration fee is refundable only until the registration deadline, which is 48 hours before that class date/time. Your class registration is also fully transferable. If you are unable to attend a class for which you are registered, please email us with the person's name who will attend in your place: concordartassociation@yahoo.com. CAA will not process any refunds after the registration deadline, unless CAA has to cancel the class for some reason, such as not meeting the minimum attendance requirement. However, each individual instructor reserves the right to make private exchange, transfer or refund arrangements, if they wish, with any registered student who misses the class.
