Our guest artist for our November meeting is an award-winning watercolor artist, Michael Reardon, who will share some of his favorite watercolor painting tips and techniques. Join us on Tuesday, November 8th (1-3pm) at the Concord Library. The meeting is free and open to the public.

As described in his bio on his website, "Michael uses watercolor to record his observations, convey a sense of place and light, and communicate his impressions of the built, the natural, and the imagined worlds."

When he's not painting in his Oakland studio, he exhibits and teaches all around the world. You can even join him for a painting excursion in the Provence region of France in September 2017.

Plein air painting at the Martinez Waterfront Park

plein air painting concord art association

The shoreline at Martinez Waterfront Park is one of our favorite places to enjoy painting outside. There's no shortage of scenic views for subject matter - from hillsides and waterways to trees, rocks and pathways. This was our last plein air painting excursion for the year and it was a beautiful crisp, sunny morning for painting, sketching and shooting photos. Below are some of our works in progress.

We'll be meeting in mid-January to discuss our plans for locations and dates in 2017 - use the contact form at the right to let us know if you'd like to join the effort.

Practicing with pears

concord art association pears

At our October meeting, Lisa Fulmer shared a few tips for how to use Inktense watercolor pencils on raw canvas. The pigments in these colored pencils really pop when you add water - it's so fun to experiment with shading and blending colors on wet fabric. With some pears as still-life subjects, everyone got to play! These are just some of the pears in progress...a good time was had by all.

Plein air painting at Cline Cellars

We had a FABULOUS day painting in Sonoma at Cline Cellars last month. Water, flowers, butterflies, trees, exotic birds, turtles, statues...it had everything!

Join us this month for our last plein air painting excursion of the year - Tuesday, October 18th at the Martinez Regional Shoreline - click the Activities page for details.

October guest artist: Lisa Fulmer

Adding shading and finished pear

Join us for our next member meeting (the public is welcome, too!) at the Concord Library on Tuesday, October 11th from 1-3pm. Our guest artist is our CAA president, Lisa Fulmer.

Lisa will lead a hands-on demo for everyone to try - using Inktense watercolor pencils on raw canvas fabric. You'll be drawing a pear and blending shades of yellow, orange and green together with water to create interest and dimension. You'll get to bring home your canvas work of art - come play with us!

Start with sketching and wet brushing

The benefit of working on raw canvas is that it's textural and absorbent, plus you have so many options for what to do with your finished work. Mount it to a board, embroider on it, stitch it into a soft book or a pillow, collage it onto a canvas, use it in an art quilt or on a tote bag, or just place it under glass in a frame as is.

Below are a couple examples Lisa created for a manufacturer of embroidered iron-on letters - imagine illustrating your own soft canvas book for a special child, friend or family member!

Visit Lisa's blog to see more of her art and craft - we look forward to seeing you at the meeting. Bring along a couple flat brushes, a small and a medium size. Pencils, water cups and canvas fabric will be provided.
